Swine ‘Flu May Be Reducing

woman-mask There are now sixteen people in the UK whose immune system has failed them, and let them catch "Swine ‘flu". Most of these caught it in Mexico. None of them are particularly ill, as this is turning out to be a relatively mild strain of ‘flu.

This will be packaged and ready to be delivered throughout Europe in about 2 weeks. This DNA test will mean that swine ‘flu can be identified in a victim in 2 hours. This is a fantastic result which will tell the hospital which antibiotic treatment to use to help boost the immune system and other steps they need to take.

This is another step in the rubbishing of alternative medicine by the scientific community. It is as if there is a concerted attempt by drug companies, certain scientists, and the EU to drive all alternatives to drug treatments underground.

By 2011 herbalist manufacturers will not even be able to say something gentle like: ‘a certain herb may help the liver to function better’ even when there is evidence of herbalists using it to do so, and observing the results, for centuries.

Now, the observations of practitioners over a similar period of patients undergoing detox treatment of various kinds are being discounted through lack of scientific proof.

How Detox Helps

Many people state that they feel much better after a detox. That is not to say that every product with ‘detox’ written on it is necessarily fantastic; but neither is it true to say that none of them work. That is throwing the baby out with the dishwater.

Obesity Drug Approved In UK

The drug Rimonabant (sold as Acomplia) has now been approved by the UK authorities for use in reducing obesity. This means that a whole new bunch of overweight people can swap being overweight for a 1 in 10 chance of developing low mood and depression, anxiety, irritability, nervousness and sleep disorders.

I don’t preach at individuals who can’t lose weight; life is tricky. But government and doctors ought to know better how to deal with weight loss. That they don’t is indicated by the waistline of many of those doctors and government ministers.

It’s Starch Stupid

If they studied the ample evidence for about 20 minutes, this would show that starch (potatoes, bread, rice, pasta) produces an overweight condition and not fat.

This may be counter-intuitive, but it’s true.

In which case, fat blocking drugs will not be as effective for 99% of people as cutting potatoes, bread, rice, pasta from the diet.

You can check the evidence easily yourself on the Internet. This is why Metabolic Syndrome is on the climb; it is why diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions; it is why obesity is rocketing in the US, now followed closely by the UK.

In 20 years everyone will accept the fallacy of the “eating fat makes you fat” argument. Since the view was first aired in the USA in the early 80s, it has become so enshrouded in folk lore such that most doctors, journalists, and thus normal humans believe it with a passion. However, it’s just not true.

Surely, cut right down on saturated fats and trans fats which are bad for you; but, in general, it’s starch which makes you fat, not fat.

A Diet For Obesity

So, if you want to lose weight, don’t hit the drugs. So this:

Breakfast: try berries and sugar-free yoghurt.

Lunch and Dinner: (lean) protein and salad, or protein and (non starchy) vegetables. No potatoes, pasta, rice or bread.

Mid-mornning/afternoon Snacks: carrot sticks or celery dipped into humus or tahini; or apple wedges dipped into peanut butter.

Cutting out the starch feels weird; but you will very soon get used to it.

Do this for 2 months and, if you are in the 90% of people who do not need professional help, the weight will start to drop off. If you have other health issues, then you will need help from a nutritionist, for example.

Remember it is what you do 90% of the time that makes the difference; don’t sweat if you stray a little occasionally. And if you fall of the wagon altogether, just start again; no guilt, now.

Disaster For Alternative Health – One Person Dies

One whole person has died after stupidly treating stomach pain with a Chinese herbal pain killer, rather than going to the doctor, reports the Daily Telegraph (15th June 08), well known in the UK for its balanced views (not).

Lazy Telegraph journalists have picked up a news story reported that the whole of herbalism and acupuncture should be tightly regulated because of one person dying.

A suggestion that the news story was posted on a bogus news service to tempt journalists looking for an easy page filler have received no comment from the rag.

As usual, the pro-natural-healthcare agencies will waste many person-hours issuing corrections to the hysterical story and arming their members with bullet points refuting it.

Meanwhile, thousands die daily from prescription drug use; abuse; mis-prescription; interaction of multiple drugs prescribed; and under-testing and poor testing protocols employed by drug companies.

Woman Trips Over Vitamin Pill – Ban Called For

Tuesday, Hull, UK.

Earlier this week Marion Pointer, a 47-year old customer services operative from Hull was badly hurt in an accident caused by a vitamin pill.

She had dropped the pill earlier onto a lino floor and lost it. Later, when padding around in bare feet she stood on it. The shock caused her to reel and fall onto her wireless network hub and stab herself with the aerial. This was stitched up after 7 hours spent waiting in a corridor on a hospital trolley.

The Medicines Patrol Agency of the Department of Health said:

“We have been warning about the dangers of the vitamin pills for many years. The general public are unaware of the inherent risks. To ensure complete safety, one option is for all health food shop staff to carry out a written risk assessment before these dangerous products can be sold.”

The government announced that the Select Committee on Making Things Hard For Alternative Medicine would be considering whether vitamins should only be available in liquid form from now on. Another option is to require manufacturers to make vitamin pills more visible when dropped. Fluorescent colouring is one option on the table.

The Vitamin Manufacturers’ Association said they thought these suggestions were reasonable. Their main concern was that of cost. They did not want any new regulations to push vitamins through the £100 a bottle level, or some people would not be able to afford them.

Ms Pointer was tonight taking Echinacea to try and avoid developing MRSA following her hospital visit. Some people never learn.
